Kolab is a proven personal information management solution enabling users and organisations to share emails, appointments, contacts and more in mixed client environments using an open storage format. Any email client speaking standard protocols can be served, but so far support for non-standard protocols like the product-specific Microsoft ActiveSync was underdeveloped. Supported by a grant of the NLnet Foundation, Kolab Systems and Libertech are working to integrate the Kolab Groupware Solution with the Z-Push project, a Free Software ActiveSync implementation. All results will be released as Free Software in cooperation with the Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) which has accepted the project under its fiduciary programme. Last week the project reached its first milestone with the release of the 0.4 version, which is now available for testing. ?If organisations want to move towards open standards, they often still have plenty of existing hardware like mobile phones, that are limited to closed solutions like ActiveSync.", says Michiel Leenaars, strategy director at NLnet Foundation. ?With support for Z-Push, Kolab can support those devices and thus provide a strong migration path towards open standards". Coordinated by Kolab Systems, the development is driven by the initial developer of the connector, Alain Abbas of the French Free Software company Libertech. Alain Abbas comments: ?We had 150 iPhone users of Kolab working productively on an earlier version of the connector for about a year, but some crucial components were missing and we lacked good configuration management. All of this is currently being resolved according to our development time line.? ?ActiveSync support has become more important with more devices supporting it as their preferred means of data synchronisation?, explains Georg Greve, CEO of Kolab Systems. ?Kolab is unique in that it incorporates many of the best and proven Free Software technologies which have benefited from contributions originating around Kolab. So when considering how to resolve this issue, we chose the Kolab way: Work with an existing Free Software project that has the same aim, and help it reach its goal.? Greve concludes: ?Our thanks go to NLnet for their support and to the entire Kolab community that is now participating in the testing of Z-Push and the new connector.? The ClamAV signature update daily.cvd 10938 causes a segmentation fault in all ClamAV versions older than 0.96 (as used in Kolab Server) on 32 bit systems. A new signature update was issued shortly afterwards, but since Kolab Server is configured to update the signatures every full hour by default, it is very likely that your clamd crashed, too. Delivery of mails with attachments (HTML mails fall into this category) was not possible until the second signature update, because the fallback mechanism (using "clamscan" instead of the daemon) was affected, too. Please verify if clamd is no longer running, e.g. with "ps ax|grep clamd" and start it again as user kolab or user root: /kolab/bin/openpkg rc clamav start Otherwise the much slower fallback mechanism will still be used. First courses and certifications will be available in autumn 2010. The Kolab Groupware Solution provides an interoperable, open and fully Free Software based approach to Personal Information Management (PIM) for organizations of any size. Thanks to its hyper-modularity, Kolab's core groupware functionality of email, calendaring, contacts and task management can be integrated into a variety of scenarios and solutions. Kolab provides this in a variety of environments and platforms, including GNU/Linux, Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X, including in mixed client environments. Kolab Systems AG is the newly re-launched backbone of the Kolab Enterprise Community, a network of companies providing professional support, integration and other services around the Kolab Groupware Solution. To ensure highest levels of quality for customers, training and certification will be provided for administrators, help desk operators and users of Kolab. These courses and hands-on tests will be developed specifically by OpenSource Training Ralf Spenneberg in close cooperation with Kolab Systems AG and its partner companies. ?Kolab is a mature solution that has been in production for more than five years. So we were naturally aware of successes as well as problems, and our analysis showed that often problems were related to a lack of awareness for the elegant way to solve some of the advanced scenarios the Kolab Groupware Solution offers,? explains Georg Greve, CEO of Kolab Systems. ?With the training and certification we now employ proven methods to distribute the knowledge of best practices and practical experience in the field and ensure that customers have meaningful criteria to choose between different providers.? The first Kolab administration classes and certifications are planned for autumn 2010. These classes and exams are conducted by OpenSource Training Ralf Spenneberg. ?We are developing practical exams. The students need to demonstrate the ability to install, configure and troubleshoot the Kolab Groupware Solution to pass the exam. This garantees the high level of the exam.? states Ralf Spenneberg. ?Students may take the exam without attending the training class. Thus skilled administrators, knowing Kolab, can directly become certified.? From now on I will coordinate the development roadmap and the release schedules, but I will not necessarily be a developer and I will by no means dictate the direction of development. Instead, I want to gather input from the community ans ask for feedback cause this is the kind of collaborative development that I know to make projects become successful. Thomas and I have worked hard on the Kolab server 2.2.4 release and I'm happy that we were able to release it today. It was a great opportunity for me to learn something about the Kolab release process. I'd like to thank Thomas for all his work as the development coordinator in the past and for the help he still gives me. He will continue to back me up when I'm not available, but please raise all your problems, bugs, concerns and ideas primary to me instead of Thomas so that he can focus on development again. These packages are not meant to be used in productive environments yet but only for testing. These packages provide ActiveSync capability for the Kolab Groupware Solution, allowing users to connect ActiveSync enabled devices such as mobile phones using Maemo/Meego, Android, Symbian, Windows Mobile, and the iPhone. This support is still under development, and is not recommended for production environments yet. Final packages are expected for autumn 2010. There are a couple of known issues specific to several devices. These are/will be documented in the wiki at https://wiki.kolab.org/index.php/Z_push#Clients As most fixes need to be applied in Z-push, I will work with the Z-push developers to incorporate the necessary patches and then likely provide an updated Z-Push package. These packages require Kolab server 2.2.4 release to be installed, configured and running. If your server meets these requirements, no manual configuration should be required. Nevertheless you are strongly advised to read http://files.kolab.org/incoming/wickert/ix86-debian5.0/1st.README ATTENTION, users in the United Stated of America: For installations in the United States of America these packages cannot be provided at the current point in time due to an export restriction according to section 8 of the GNU General Public License (GPL) on Z-Push itself. Kolab Systems is working with the Z-Push upstream on this and other issues, and we are confident the issue should soon be resolved. Until then, I invite all citizens of the free world to test the packages from http://files.kolab.org/incoming/wickert/ix86-debian5.0/ Please report any bugs you find to the Kolab mailing lists.
